One aspect of green cars is the products that go into making and caring for them. Products such as polishing compounds, engine fluids, cleaners and paints all affect the environment and our health. There’s lots of room for “snake-oil” type of products in this category and there’s real debate over the usefulness of some i.e. nitrogen in tires. I’ll explore a few here and feel free to add and critique at will!
Upholstery Cleaners:
Adam’s Carpet and Upholstery cleaner claims to be non-toxic and non-allergenic
Engine Fluids:
Sierra brand Antifreeze seems to be the popular one for this category. It is still toxic however and require equally careful handling and disposal at your municipal recycling facility. Unfortunately car manufacturers still do not use the less toxic variety because it’s more expensive. A new antifreeze worth mentioning is the Orange types. Orange type antifreeze is good for five years or 100,000 -150,000 miles in newer vehicles (1996 and later) and they can be used in older cars if the green antifreeze is flushed thoroughly since the two don’t mix. Useful life is about four years or 60,000 miles in older cars. I change my own antifreeze and prefer the Orange type since the chances of spills are reduce with less frequent changes.
Cleaners:
I suggest the best approach is to search Green Seal’s list of non-toxic products and inquire at your local store if they carry them. I am only saying this since my trusted Simple Green did not qualify for Green Seal’s stamp because it contains a federally registered toxic ingredient. The company is now working on substitute ingredient. If you use Simple Green, make sure to dilute it.
Tires:
Costco has been using nitrogen to inflate tires for a few years now claiming that it keeps tires inflated longer and improves fuel economy. And they top it off with nifty green caps. The blogosphere however is littered with hearty debates about the benefits claimed by this measure. Those who have used it swear by it while the other side points to the flawed reasoning and hype. The two extremes are well represented in these two links:

http://www.cartalk.com/content/columns/Archive/2005/February/02.html. The debate has catalyzed at the fact that regardless of what’s in your tires, you should check the pressure often (monthly).
The conclusion however is more complex. Tire pressure varies depending on weather and friction. The proper way to check pressure is when the tire is cold; making sure that the tire is inflated at the manufacturers specification listed on the sidewall. Another consideration is the seasons. Tire pressure decreases by about 1 pound per square inch for every 10-degree drop in outside air temperature. This means that your tires may be under-inflated in very cold weather.
As for my position in the debate: I have not heard enough about the benefits to gas mileage from keeping pressure more steady during driving (the debate seems to focus mostly on performance rather than fuel economy). Secondly I’m willing to try out anything to keep my bike tires inflated so I will start from there. Costco charges $3-$5 to fill a tire.
